Active Vision for Neural Development and Landmark Navigation

چکیده
Introduction Brains and sensory systems are characterized by limited bandwidth and computational resources. At any point in time, we can focus our attention only to a limited set of features or objects. One of the most remarkable –and often neglected– differences between machine vision and biological vision is that computers are often asked to process an entire image in one shot and produce an immediate answer whereas animals are free to explore the image over time searching for features and dynamically integrating information over time.

Evolutionary Active Vision Toward Three Dimensional Landmark-Navigation
Active vision may be useful to perform landmark-based navigation where landmark relationship requires active scanning of the environment. In this article we explore this hypothesis by evolving the neural system controlling vision and behavior of a mobile robot equipped with a pan/tilt camera so that it can discriminate visual patterns and arrive at the goal zone. The experimental setup employed...

متن کاملAutomatic Landmark Selection for Navigation with Panoramic Vision
The use of visual landmarks for robot navigation is a promising eld. It is apparent that the success of navigating by visual landmarks depends on the landmarks chosen. This paper reviews a monocular camera system proposed by Bianco and Zelinsky, 1999] which automatically selects landmarks and uses them for lo-calisation and navigation tasks. The monocular system's landmark selection policy resu...
متن کاملMultimedia Technologies for Landmark-Based Vehicle Navigation
Most existing Global Positioning System (GPS)-based vehicle navigation systems (also termed route guidance systems) utilize distance within their turn-by-turn navigation directions. For example, a system might give a voice instruction like ”turn left in 0.2 mile”. However, human drivers usually use landmarks to help their navigation. Some previous research has shown that there are performance-r...
